Academic degrees

Use of academic titles

Persons who have been awarded an academic degree by a recognized (domestic or foreign) post-secondary educational institution have the right to use this degree in the abbreviated form specified in the award certificate, whereby the academic degree may be used with a gender-specific supplement.

In the abbreviated form, every academic degree is awarded in a gender-neutral manner; however, the abbreviated form may also be used in a gender-specific manner.

Withdrawal of recognition

If plagiarism is detected in an academic paper, the academic title acquired with it can be revoked.  The implementation of revocation procedures is the responsibility of the Studienpräses.

If an academic degree has already been awarded and the procedure reveals that plagiarism has occurred, the assessment will be declared null and void, meaning that the basis for the award of the academic degree no longer applies and the academic degree awarded will be revoked. A new topic can be worked on and submitted.

Verification

For the verification of academic degrees, you must observe a few things for data protection reasons.

The Studienpräses office requires a scan of the person's official photo ID and the person's signed declaration of consent. This must contain the following information:

  • Exact details of the required data (e.g. academic degree, number of ECTS achieved, etc.)
  • name
  • Date of birth
  • Address of the company or name and address of the person concerned
  • Field of study
  • Matriculation number
  • Intended use

Send your request for verification of academic degrees to verifications@univie.ac.at.

For confirmations of dental and human medicine degrees, please contact the Medical University of Vienna directly, even if the diploma was issued by the University of Vienna (until 2004).

Active students of the University of Vienna can download most confirmations themselves at any time in u:space under Personal > My documents. The documents are officially signed and accepted by the authorities.

On this page you will find an overview of the most common confirmations and information on where to obtain them.
